Starting school is an exciting milestone for both children and families. It's natural to wonder whether your child is ready for this next big step.

Our high quality educational programs are designed to support your child's learning, development, and wellbeing while preparing them for a successful transition to school. During the preschool years, children develop the social, emotional, communication, physical, and thinking skills that form the foundation for lifelong learning. Participating in a quality kindergarten program provides children with opportunities to build confidence, independence, resilience and a love of learning that will benefit them well beyond their first year of school.

What Does School Readiness Mean?

School-ready children are developing the skills to:

  • Manage their own belongings and personal care.

  • Communicate their needs and ideas.

  • Follow routines and simple instructions.

  • Play and cooperate with others.

  • Persist when learning becomes challenging.

  • Develop early literacy, numeracy, and problem-solving skills.

Every child develops at their own pace, school readiness is about supporting each child's overall development and helping them build confidence for a successful transition to school.

How Can Families Help?

Simple everyday experiences can make a big difference, including:

  • Reading together every day.

  • Encouraging independence with dressing, toileting, and lunchboxes.

  • Playing board games and taking turns.

  • Talking about emotions and practising problem-solving.

  • Drawing, cutting, building, and creating.

  • Counting, cooking, and exploring letters and numbers through play.

These everyday moments help children develop the skills they will use every day at school.

Our School Readiness Checklist

To support families, we have developed a School Readiness Checklist in collaboration with:

  • Research from the Department of Education and Training
