At Little Genius, we are committed to ensuring the safety and wellbeing of every child, both within our centre and beyond. Road safety is an essential part of a child’s learning journey, and as parents and caregivers, we play a vital role in helping them understand how to stay safe around roads and vehicles.
Why Road Safety Matters
Melbourne is a busy city, and whether you’re walking to the park, riding bikes, or driving to childcare, it’s important that children develop safe habits early. Teaching road safety from a young age helps them become more aware of their surroundings and builds lifelong safety skills.

Top Road Safety Tips for Families
🚦 Hold Hands and Stay Close Always hold your child’s hand when walking near roads or in car parks. Young children can be unpredictable, so keeping them close ensures they stay out of harm’s way.
🚦 Stop, Look, Listen, and Think Teach children the golden rule: Stop at the curb, look both ways for cars, listen for approaching vehicles, and think before crossing the road. Modelling this behaviour every time you cross sets a strong example.
🚦 Use Pedestrian Crossings Encourage your child to only cross at designated pedestrian crossings or traffic lights. Show them how to wait for the green signal and check that all vehicles have stopped before stepping onto the road.
🚦 Safe Car Travel
Always use an age-appropriate car seat or booster seat that meets Australian safety standards.
Double-check that harnesses and seatbelts are securely fastened before every trip.
Never leave children unattended in a vehicle, even for a short time.
🚦 Bike and Scooter Safety
Ensure children wear a correctly fitted helmet every time they ride.
Supervise young riders and encourage them to use footpaths and safe riding areas.
Teach them to stop and check for cars before crossing driveways.
Learning Through Play
At Little Genius, we incorporate road safety education into our program. Dramatic play, incursions, storytelling, and fun games help children grasp important safety concepts in an engaging way. We encourage families to continue these conversations at home through modelling, playing games or reading books about road safety.
A Shared Responsibility
Keeping children safe around roads is a shared effort between parents, educators, and the wider community. By consistently reinforcing road safety rules and setting a positive example, we can help our little ones develop safe habits that will last a lifetime.
Let’s work together to keep our children safe and confident as they explore the world around them!
